Urgent campaign to raise funds to offer scholarships to the first 15 students at le Centre collégial de l'Alberta in Edmonton.

New college-level educational programs

A new French language college program was launched by the University of Alberta in Edmonton to provide different programs in French at le Centre collégial de l'Alberta.

The first program to be offered will be Business Administration, which was scheduled to start in September 2013. Other programs are being developed, such as tourism, practical nursing and early childhood development programs

In order to increase general awareness of the Business Administration program in Alberta and beyond, this campaign will raise funds to offer 15 full scholarships to 15 deserving students.

The goal of this campaign is to raise $42,000 to offer 15 full scholarships.

We have already received over $16,000 from community not for profit organizations, so we are launching this crowd-funding initiative to finance the missing portion.

Program suspended!

It is important to note that on April 30, the University of Alberta suspended the Business Administration program, citing that the program had not received a sufficient number of applications for it to start at the beginning of September 2013, and this after two other program start delays.

In an interview with the media on May 15, a University administrator mentioned that about “thirty students need to be registered in the program in order for them to receive a meaningful academic experience”, however, in a meeting of University administrators in December 2012, it was decided that the number of students required to launch the program would be eight.

It is also important to note that this fundraising initiative to offer fifteen full scholarships is community-lead, not by University of Alberta or the Centre collegial de l’Alberta.

The objective is to quickly recruit fifteen students and present their complete application to University administrators hoping that they will overturn the decision to suspend the Business Administration program, given that they would have double the required number of students. The scholarships will allow the students to start their studies in September 2013.

If the University decides not to reinstate the program for a September start, the funds collected will be placed in a reserve until the program is launched, however, it is critical for the program to start in September 2013.

A petition is now circulating to ask University of Alberta administrators and the Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education to reinstate the Business Administration program and protect other programs that are currently being developed. If you have not signed the petition, you can do so by clicking here.

Alberta’s francophone community and the College’s future students thank you for your encouragement and your financial support.
